Crafting for the Holidays: Christmas Ornaments

One of my favorite ways to mark the beginning of the Christmas season is to decorate my Christmas tree! While store-bought ornaments can be beautiful and make for a very polished tree, I love hand made ornaments the best. Making ornaments is a fun family activity, and can be a way to make some nice personalized ornaments for gifts.

Every year I make a variety of ornaments. My favorite style is to repurpose old wood (ie fallen tree branches) to make discs to paint. I’ve done this for several years. I tend to use whatever type of wood I have access to, my absolute favorite is when I can get some cedar! My dad had a huge old cedar tree fall in his yard, so I have him to cut me some slices for ornaments. Its such a rich beautiful color, and smells so good!

I also LOVE snowmen, so I’ve focused the art on my wood ornaments on portraying snowmen in a variety of scenes or multi-piece snowmen. I wood burn a design, then paint it with acrylic paint, and finally seal the ornaments. They have such a cute rustic look that I love!

Another fun way to make ornaments is using light weight wooden discs. You can add scrapbook paper to the discs, photographs, stickers, or painted designs. I’ve made a couple different types of wooden disc ornaments. The first set I made using printed images of my favorite band. I print the images or art work in a size that fits the disc, then cut it out and attache with Mod Podge. Finally I add a clear coat on top to seal it. Ornaments like this can be personalized with a favorite artist, tv show, or even printed family photos.

Photo Ornaments

Ornaments with pretty scrapbook paper backgrounds are great to personalize with a name or monogram. These make a nice gift that can fit in a greeting card, or be used as a gift tag!

Monogram Ornaments

The newest ornament design I’m doing this year is a chalkboard art style ornament. It’s got a simple black chalkboard background with a name or monogram and a simple decoration. These are cute and classic looking. I think they will make GREAT teacher gifts!

Crafting for the Holidays! Signs

this sign is on my mantle

I’m super excited that fall is finally here! Crisp cool evenings, campfires, and family are on my mind. I’m also thinking about crafting for the holidays!

Fall through Christmas time is probably my favorite time to make art to decorate my home. It’s also a time when I LOVE to make things to share with others as gifts or through my craft shop!

Throughout the next few weeks, I’m going to share what I’m working on, and share some ideas for some thoughtful personalized gifts that are easy on your wallet!

For me, crafting and making things is art therapy. When I get my materials out to sketch, paint, or make something, I’m able to set aside the hundreds of things running through my brain and totally focus on whatever it is I’m making. it allows me to be totally mindful and in the moment, paying attention to the feeling of my paintbrush smoothing on a bright swipe of paint or the scratch of my pencil on the sketch paper. When I’m making I can step away from the load of life and dwell in a place of possibility and beauty. For me this is a much needed escape.

Making rustic style wood signs is a favorite thing for me to make. I use reclaimed wood most of the time, making use of scrap material, pallet wood, or wood from old cabinets or furniture. I cut and assemble signs, or just cut block pieces and the refinish them to look weathered and aged before finally adding an image or phrase.

Take a look at photos of some of the wood signs I’ve made. Some of these are currently available for purchase in my shop, and I’m always happy to take requests for custom signs.

Get back to school ready with a Trench themed printable planner!

Besides new colored pens, one other thing that gets me excited about back to school time is a fresh new planner. There’s tons of pretty planner you can buy, but they are either too expensive or don’t have the features in them that I need. So, for over 5 years now, I have been creating a custom planner for myself. Problems solved! Planner features that I need, reasonable price, and I can theme the planner however makes me happy.

This year I decided to theme a planner around my favorite band’s new album – Trench by Twenty One Pilots! I made 2 different versions to represent the theme of being a bandito and part of a special group who will always be by my side. The first design is a yellow daisy pattern inspired by the daisies in the “Jumpsuit” music video, and the second is a yellow plaid inspired by the new music video for “The Hype.”

Take a look at sample pages of my planner. I’ve made it available as a digital download printable file in my Etsy shop for just $12! Follow the links below to purchase and use coupon code CLIQUEFAMILY for 20% off your purchase!

Here’s another simple little upcycling project I just completed.  I used scrap pieces of wood from pallets and other projects and made them into cute little inspirational decorations with a rustic farmhouse feel.  Check out my photo story of how I made these.

I will have some of these available soon at The Craft Nook in Archdale, and would be thrilled to custom make a wood block for you.
